10 Factors to Consider in Selecting a Scanning or Digitizing Service
Lasting Links, Inc. conducted a survey among nine leading scanning and digitizing firms in December, 2009. We wanted to find out which factors scanning services believe should be the most important to customers in choosing a scanning or digitizing service.
Responding companies include the following nationally-known chains and privately-held companies:
- BritePix
- Costco Photo Lab
- Dig My Pics
- Digital Pickle
- Fotobridge
- iMemories
- Larsen digital
- ScanDigital
- Wal-Mart Photo Lab
Surveys were conducted via the Internet, in person, and by telephone by GCI Research, Inc. during the month of December, 2009. Respondents were largely owners, presidents or CEOs of privately-held companies or department managers in digital labs of large national chains.
Respondents were invited to review these instructions before completing their responses:
- Assume you have a total of 100 points or weights to divide among all of the decision factors that should be important to customers in choosing a scanning service in the list below.
- Revise the weight or value of each decision factor according to how important that factor should be to customers. Some factors might have as few as 1 or 0 weighting points; others might have as many as 15 or 20 or more points of weight.
- Feel free to add other factors and their weights, keeping in mind that the sum total of all the weights must equal 100.
You may review a summary of their answers in the chart and table below. These are the factors that the scanning service providers believe should be most important to you in choosing a scanning service. Do these findings agree with your opinions? For example, by your way of thinking,
- Is quality slightly less-important than ease of use?
- Is turnaround time more important than whether the scanning is done overseas?
- Is the option to preview scans (and delete a portion without being charged for the unwanted scans) less than half as important as just about any other factor?
Please let our audience of regular folks, scanning service providers and others know whether you agree or not by completing this brief survey. (Your individual answers will be kept anonymous and will never be shown outside our company. They will only be combined and reported with the responses of others like you.)
What questions do you have about scanning or digitizing your memories or about scanning service providers? Feel free to ask below and we’ll respond. You may also want to see a related, 2-1/2 minute video on the importance of scanning or digitizing your memories here.
